    An update on mom
There are a good number of you who are interested in hearing about my mom's health, so here's the latest update from my sister's e-mail.  Some good news, some not-as-good news, but overall I'm feeling alright about it:

    My sister's conversation with Mom's doctor )

Back in tonight after the movie, and if there are any other updates, I'll let you guys know. Radio silence continues since I don't have internet at the hospital, but I'll try and reply to every IM/mail/message/whatever when I get home tomorrow morning.

    Baldr Sky Cross Review
I've been playing Baldr Sky on the big-screen TV, and I've gotten lots of amusing opinions on it already. Let's take a look at some of the conversations that have come up due to this game:

Matt: I've sat through hours of expository dialogue in a language I can't understand, hell if I'm going to miss the porn!

    Ian: Their camera is crooked.

Jes: What do you mean you won't put the porn on the big screen?  I'm disappointed in you, and don't think I can live with you anymore.
Me: Well, okay, if you insist.  I'll put it on auto and go make a sandwich or something.
Jes: No, don't, if you do that I'll turn beet red and have to run.

    Amy: sporn?
Me: more robots than sporn, but there is probably sporn at some point later in this game
    Amy: woo~
Me: Why is it that all the girls I know are more interested in the sporn than the guys are?
    Amy: i have... no idea...
Me: Jes, Miho, and now you are all "woo, sporn!"

Danny: ...you got stupidity in my robot porn!
Me: You got porn in my robot stupidity!

Albert: Good to know that in the future, EULAs are just as ignored as they are now.

    Calm down, fella
I just have to keep telling myself the old saying: "This, too, shall pass."

I can also use the slightly less old mantra: "Because I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me."

This current financial situation has me slightly less scared than when my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer. I really need to work on that.

    Mom update
Mom's oncology appointment this morning went well - she didn't get into the clinical trial, but she won't have to go through chemotherapy, either. The doctor currently has her on a one-a-day pill called Tarceva (http://www.tarceva.com/patient/caregiver/taking_care.jsp) that should cause a rash on her face and some mild nausea... which is infinitely preferable to chemo's side effects, especially in winter.

    More recipes to come.

    Recipes from mom
    Thit nuong

    2 pounds pork (shoulder?)
    1 bunch green onions
    1 bulb garlic
    1/2 tsp salt
2 Tsp nuoc mam (fish sauce)
2 Tsp "nuoc mau" (water and caramelized sugar - I guess I could call this caramel)
    2 tsp sugar
    1/2 tsp pepper

    - Slice the pork thinly (helps if it's frozen - in fact, may have to be frozen to cut thinly enough)
    - Mash the white parts of the green onion into a paste (dice the green part of the onion and save it for later), add crushed garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly.
    - Marinate for a half hour (or longer).
    - Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Put the pork flat for 15 minutes, turn over, 15 more minutes
    - After removing from oven, add diced green onions, serve with either vermicelli or rice, and remember the nuoc mam pha (recipe below)

    nuoc mam pha

    1 part sugar
    1 part nuoc mam
    1 part vinegar (or lemon)
    3 parts water

serve on the side - if on vermicelli noodles, feel free to pour over the bowl (with sprouts, pickles, lettuce, anything that you want to serve the pork with)

    Ga nuong

    Chicken
    one whole chicken (6 lb)

    Marinade
2 Tsp caramel (same stuff as above)
    2.5 Tsp salt
    1 Tsp crushed garlic
    2 tsp granulated onion
    1 Tsp granulated bouillon
    1.5 Tsp cooking oil
    2 Tsp soy sauce

    - Rub the chicken in salt and wash it (mom says this is to get the stink out of the skin)
    - marinate with above ingredients
    - Heat the oven to 350 degrees, stick in the chicken for 45 minutes.
    - Poke the chicken with a stick - if the liquid is clear, it's done

    All according to plan!
Huh. On Wednesday, Albert and I went "Hey, what would happen if we asked Johnny Yong Bosch if we could interview him for S-words?"

On Sunday, Kevin posted that interview. That was FAST!

The Keeping Busy File Marches On
How many ways can Win-Myun Kim express that certain Japanese men are good-looking? You'll have to find out in this week's Spwug posting, which deals with how the tokusatsu genre has changed a bit in the post OdaJoe era.

I'm just glad that he got to write "primeval masculinity," that's a personal favorite of mine.

    From the Keeping Busy file
That Win-Myun Kim guy has posted on Spwug again, and I have to wonder if he tried to bite off more than he can chew this time. I mean, he's trying to get all Freudian and stuff. Think he did alright? I don't!

    From the Keeping Busy file
Some guy named Win-Myun Kim has started writing at Spwug again. Who knows how long he'll keep on writing? But, I guess I'll keep reading. He has some interesting things to say.

Plus, I think he's a macho business donkey wrestler.

    Little update
I haven't posted much recently, with the craziness of the holidays, job searching, and other life issues getting in the way.

Here's an update on my life:

    - Looking for work. I'm trying to send out at least one application per day, but recently that's been derailed because...
    - my mom had surgery yesterday to remove a swollen lymph node from her neck. There are a lot more swollen lymph nodes in her breasts, and we're waiting for the results of the biopsy to see if she has Hodgkin's lymphoma or non-Hodgkins. Keeping my fingers crossed that it's relatively benign.
    - I have fancy plans... and pants to match.

    So...
Anyone need a writer, an editor, or a community manager?

I'm honestly okay with no longer being at SAP, it gives me a good, strong kick in the pants to get me out of this rut I've been in the past 3 years.
